Universally renowned as an inspirational statesman, writer and orator, but perhaps less well known is that Winston Churchill was also an enthusiastic amateur painter.
Xavier Bray is the director of the Wallace Collection in London which, this May, is presenting the first major retrospective of the paintings of Winston Churchill. Churchill stayed at the Exmoor Forest Inn (his signature is in the visitors’ book) and played polo regularly at Dunster. Dr Bray will be talking about the life of Churchill, both as a statesman and as an artist who, given the demands of his political career, was not only surprisingly prolific but also wrote about his painting with illuminating enthusiasm.
