Sara Hudston’s book A Life Outside: Hope Bourne on Exmoor is being published by The Exmoor Society in November this year. It draws on years of original research in the society’s Hope Bourne archive and interviews with people who knew Bourne, as well as some of her Australian relations. The book also includes a generous selection of newly-rediscovered pieces from the weekly newspaper column that Bourne wrote for The West Somerset Free Press. Never-before republished, these extracts are among the best of Bourne’s work and offer a glimpse of Exmoor life through the eyes of one of the 20th-century’s most extraordinary nature writers.
Sara recently co-curated an exhibition of Bourne’s work and life at the Somerset Rural Life Museum in Glastonbury. She is a regular contributor to The Guardian newspaper’s “Country Diary” column, often writing about Exmoor, and she runs Hazel Press, an independent publisher focusing on the environment, feminism and the arts.
