Kamao means ‘I like/I love/I want’ in the Romani dialect and you’ll be saying all that and more when you hear this exciting quartet from London perform Manouche songs (gypsy jazz), Django Reinhardt classics, jazz songs, a sprinkle of Brazilian Choro music as well as some original compositions.
Fronted since 2014 by French singer, guitarist and composer Jean de Talhouet, the band features Dave Schulman on clarinet, Dave Kelbie on guitar and Ruth Goller on double bass, creating a beautiful and rich sound that complements the vocals with haunting and lyrical harmonies.
Kamao Quartet’s repertoire ranges from hot swinging jazz featuring captivating virtuoso improvisations, to the saddest gypsy ballads, the liveliest waltzes and some personal compositions. The band are regulars on the London jazz scene, including the Vortex Jazz Club, St James Theatre in Victoria, the Royal Albert Hall and the Green Note.
